Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. A refrigerant is a liquid that is stored in your AC coils, which help cool and dehumidify the indoor air. Without refrigerants, air conditioning would not be possible. For a long time, the most common AC refrigerant was R-22 (Freon), but in 2012 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated the phase-out of R-22 through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, R-22 will no longer be legal to produce because of its destructive impact to the environment. Introducing R-410A To decrease environmental impacts, all Lennox® products are now engineered to work with the new R-410A AC refrigerant. R-410A is EPA-recognized and doesn’t contain chlorine, making it ozone-friendly. You can feel great about using this refrigerant in Upland because it’ll help make your cooling system perform efficiently, reliably and quietly, and offer the same cool comfort in the warmer months. Additional Considerations If your AC or heat pump was built anytime before 2010, it may not be R-410A-compatible. You might investigate upgrading your cooling system before R-22 is ultimately unavailable. The old refrigerant will become hard to find in the next few years, costing you more to use your system effectively. The Lennox products we offer at Klaus & Sons Heating & Air Conditioning work with R-410A, so you can rest assured we have an AC or heat pump that better meets your needs. Additionally, avoid”alternate refrigerants that claim to work in R-22 systems. These include R-407C, R-438A and R-422, all of which can actually compromise your system’s performance.
